The Original Green Lantern was a fictional character created by, and published as a superhero comic book character for DC Comics. The original character was introduced to DC Comics in 1940. The character was originally a rail line worker, who after a tram crash, came upon the powers given to him through the use of this power ring. This power which the ring gives to the character, is the power to control the physical world and its elements, for as long as the holder of the ring (Green Lantern) has the will power and strength to carry out this control. The ring, originally, had to be re-charged every twenty four hours, by touching it to the lantern for a period of time, and it was inhibited by either non-metals or wood.

In the later developments of the character, after the revival of some characters whom had been removed from the comic series, the Green Lantern became a member of the Green Lantern Corps, which was a police organization. The creators of the comic series eventually added the Green Arrow, which was Green Lantern’s partner to solving crimes.

The third series of Green Lantern character was the Bronze Age Green Lantern, and the latest, and current character is the Modern Age Green Lantern.

Each Green Lantern is given the powers through the power ring, which creates a variety of effects, and is controlled by the imagination and the will power of the current wearer. The greater the will power of the wearer, the longer and stronger the power from the ring will generate.

The movement capabilities of the Green Lantern include the ability of flight, which includes the ability to fly faster than the speed of light. The Lantern also has the ability to teleport , and the use of the ring allows for the Green Lantern to travel through time.

The ring also has power to give the wearer problem solving skills. Additionally the Lantern has the ability to translate nearly all languages while wearing the ring; communicate with other ring wielders (regardless of their distance apart from each other); allow the Lantern to have x-ray vision capabilities, diagnose different illnesses, and identify all forms of materials.

Lastly, each Green Lantern character is required to take the Lantern Oath. Each Green Lantern character will create, and has their own oath, to serve the community and to fight for the better good of society against the forces of evil.
